AMU pays condolences on Prof. A.R. Kidwai’s sad demise


ALIGARH August 26: To mourn the sad demise of Prof. Akhlaqur Rahman Kidwai, 96, former Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, a condolence meeting was held today at the Conference Room, Administrative Block under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah. Prof. Kidwai, who is survived by four daughters and two sons, had passed away in Delhi on August 24, 2016 after a brief illness.

Expressing a deep sense of sorrow and grief, Lt. Gen. Shah said that he had a close relation with Prof. Kidwai’s family and shared neighbourhood with his family members in Gurgaon. He said that Prof. Kidwai was a man of great credentials and it was because of his towering stature as an educationist and a statesman that several governments in Centre during the past six decades chose him to head different states as the Governor and a number of administrative, educational and research bodies as their Chairman.

Reading out a condolence resolution, Prof. Javed Akhtar, Registrar, said that Prof. Kidwai’s services will be remembered by the coming generations and he will always serve as an example of selfless services to people of India.

Prof. Akhtar said that besides heading the Union Public Service Commission as its Chairman from 1974 to 1977, Prof. Kidwai served as Governor of several states including Bihar, West Bengal, Haryana and Rajasthan, for a record period of 17 years. He was the Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University from 1984 to 1992.

AMU registrar said that Prof. Kidwai started his career as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at AMU in the early 1950s and in due course of time he was appointed as Reader and then Professor. He became the Head of the Department of Chemistry and continued in the capacity till 1967. He contributed significantly to the development of the department, improved the standards of teaching and research and introduced new courses of study to keep pace with latest developments in the domain of Chemistry.

Prof. Kidwai also played an important role in the University administration and served as Proctor from 1962-64. He was the first to become Dean Students’ Welfare in 1962 and served till 1967. In October 1966, he became Dean, Faculty of Science and continued in this capacity till he proceeded to join as member of the Union Public Service Commission.

On January 25, 2011, the Government of India conferred the country’s second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, on him in recognition of his services towards public affairs.

The staff and students of the Aligarh Muslim University placed on record their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to Almighty Allah for higher ranks in Jannah.
